The global refugee crisis is skyrocketing. According to the most recent UN High Commissioner for Refugees' annual report, the number of refugees worldwide in 2022 stood at a record 108.4 million, up 19.1 million from a year earlier, representing the largest-ever increase.
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) has ranked Pakistan as one of the most severe nations in the world that suffer from the brunt and heat of food insecurity, undernourishment and malnutrition and high child mortality rates. To combat these challenges, organizations such as Action Against Hunger and Islamic Relief are tackling hunger in Pakistan.
Jean-Michel Grand, executive director of Action Against Hunger UK, said: “It is deeply concerning to see hunger used as a tool in geopolitical conflicts, at a time when ensuring access to nutritious food should be a global priority.”
These are the findings of a study that assessed the household food security situation, nutritional status of children aged 6 to 59 months and feeding practices of infants and children under two years of age in 119 municipalities in four priority regions, conducted by El National Institute of Statistics (INE), The United Nations system in Honduras and Action Against Hunger.
National averages mask regional differences in hunger and poverty levels that persist in remote islands and mountains, said Suresh Murugesu, country director for Action Against Hunger Philippines. Parts of central and southern Philippines have hunger levels three to four times that of regions with the lowest levels.
