Support Action Against Hunger through your Donor Advised Fund
Donor Advised Funds offer donors greater control, flexibility, and involvement in their charitable giving. For many donors, a Donor Advised Fund can be a cost-effective alternative to starting a private foundation.
Donor Advised Funds can also support long-term philanthropic planning. Families, for example, can use them to engage multiple generations in giving decisions and align their generosity with the vision they have for the world, their communities, and the causes they care about most.
By making a gift through your Donor Advised Fund to Action Against Hunger Canada, you can help us:
- Reach families facing hunger and children at risk of severe malnutrition.
- Respond immediately when emergencies strike.
- Build long-term solutions that strengthen food security and resilience.
- Advance nutrition education and food security leadership here in Canada.
- Innovate to identify risk earlier and deliver care more effectively.

Don’t have a Donor Advised Fund yet? Here’s what you need to know to get started.
What is a Donor Advised Fund?
A Donor Advised Fund is a charitable giving account, established through a public foundation or financial institution, that lets you support Action Against Hunger and the other causes you love with less cost and complexity than a private foundation.
Here’s how it works: You contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a sponsoring organization. Your contribution grows tax-free, and you receive an immediate tax receipt at the time you give. From there, you can recommend grants to Action Against Hunger, on your timeline and at whatever pace makes sense for you.
It’s a way to centralize your giving, involve your family in decisions about where support goes, and build a lasting culture of generosity, all while making a faster, more flexible impact than many other giving vehicles allow.
More about DAFs
- Cash: With as little as $5,000, an individual, family, or foundation can establish a Donor Advised Fund.
- Appreciated Securities: Donate securities you’ve held for more than a year and eliminate capital gains tax on the transfer, while increasing the impact of your gift.
- Retirement Plan Assets: Name your DAF as a beneficiary of your retirement plan and designate loved ones as advisors so your legacy of giving continues.
- Tangible Personal Property: Assets like art or collections may qualify for a charitable deduction when contributed to your fund.
WHAT TO CONSIDER when getting started
A Donor Advised Fund is a meaningful commitment, so it’s worth setting it up thoughtfully. Here are a few best practices you may want to consider:
- Talk to your financial or wealth advisor first. They can help you understand the tax implications of your contribution and confirm if a DAF is the right fit alongside your broader financial and estate plans.
- Choose your sponsoring organization carefully. Look for one whose fees, and minimum contribution requirements align with your goals, and ask directly what assets they’ll accept. Ask how the organization’s business practices and investment policies align with your philanthropic values.
- Understand the provider’s grant policies before you set up the fund. Ask what their policy is on fund directives when you request a grant: how they define “advisory” versus binding instructions, how quickly they process grant recommendations, and whether there are any restrictions on directing funds to specific programs.
- Clarify how your gift will be acknowledged and reported. Ensure that early on, you give instructions on your interest area, beneficiary details, anonymity preference, and contact preference.
