The State of Hunger in Ethiopia

Ethiopia faces one of the ten worst food crises in the world. An estimated 5.9 million children under five — about 40% — are stunted, while 1.2 million suffer from acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of hunger.

Communities grapple with severe hunger in large pockets of the vast country, driven by protracted conflict, economic shock, and drought. Instability in bordering countries has also driven a large number of refugees to Ethiopia.

How We're Helping in Ethiopia

Action Against Hunger has been operating in Ethiopia since 1985, serving people in need, many of whom are refugees and internally displaced people. We work in the regions of Amhara, Benshangul Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, Somali, Tigray, and the city administration of Addis Ababa.

Our teams help increase access to clean water and safe sanitation, save lives by treating malnutrition, help farmers and herders whose livelihoods have been disrupted by climate change, and prevent hunger by equipping mothers with access to capital and knowledge about health and nutrition.

"Where There is Life, There is Hope"

Action Against Hunger helps refugees like Nyalat who have experienced unimaginable trauma. We run support groups where women feel safe to talk, sing, and share experiences. They also learn about breastfeeding, good hygiene, and other practices to prevent malnutrition and keep their babies healthy.
