Hunger and famine: Why people are dying in Somalia

Ahmed Khalif, the country director for Action Against Hunger in Somalia, leads a team of 110 humanitarian workers on the ground in Somalia. When I spoke to him, he mentioned that interactions with Somalis bring daily stories that move him to tears. Khalif said mothers have to make heartbreaking decisions. “You have to choose who among your children you will have to leave behind because they're weak, frail and they can no longer move.”

We Need to Act Like Health and Hunger are Related. Because They Are.

Global health experts are sounding the alarm. This time, it’s about the rise in measles, cholera and malaria – and their link to malnutrition. The reasons are complex and context-specific, but the outcomes are far too similar: many communities are moving backwards on public health, particularly among young children.

Devex Newswire: A noble endeavor but an imperfect peace

I recently had the chance to moderate a panel on the documentary “The Ants and the Grasshopper” with director Raj Patel and Charles Owubah, CEO of Action Against Hunger, at a screening held at the German ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C. For those who don’t know, the residence is one of the most impressive in town — sleek architecture and a terraced lawn with spectacular views of the nation’s capital. But it also has a secret inside: an underground space known as the Berlin Bar, where about 40 people gathered to watch the film about two Malawian women who travel to the U.S. to speak with Midwestern farmers about climate change.

Warning bells in Georgia: From growth story to hunger on Russia’s border

For years, Georgia, the tiny former Soviet republic of 3.7 million people, relied on neighbouring agricultural powerhouses – Russia next door and Ukraine across the Black Sea – to feed its citizens. But the former’s invasion of the latter has changed all that. The rising costs of food, rent, and basic services – combined with changing weather patterns due to climate change – are exposing structural weaknesses in the country’s food systems.
