Inside One of the World’s Worst Humanitarian Crises: An Interview with Action Against Hunger’s Country Director in Sudan

After nearly three years of conflict, Sudan is grappling with one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian catastrophes. More than 30 million people—almost two-thirds of the population—now need humanitarian assistance. Over 11 million people have been displaced inside the country, with more than 3 million fleeing to neighbouring states. The war has shattered food systems, destroyed markets and farmland, and disrupted trade routes, driving extreme inflation and leaving families unable to afford even the most basic food.

Sudan is now at the epicenter of one of the world’s worst hunger crises, with the most areas of active famine in the world. More than 21 million people face daily hunger, including hundreds of thousands living in catastrophic conditions marked by severe malnutrition and a real risk of death.

To better understand the scale of the crisis, Action Against Hunger Canada’s CEO, Onome Ako, sits down with our Country Director in Sudan, Samy Guessabi.
