How Farmers are Fighting Malnutrition in Mali

Chronic malnutrition continues to be a pressing challenge in Mali, disproportionately affecting women and children. To address this growing crisis, Action Against Hunger, supported by Global Affairs Canada, launched the Integrated Management of Chronic Malnutrition project—an initiative designed to boost local agriculture and provide vulnerable communities with greater access to nutritious food.

By supporting local women’s groups, this project has seen remarkable increases in agricultural production and strengthened food security in areas often plagued by food shortages. By ensuring a rich and varied diet, the project is not only nourishing families but also preparing communities for any future crises.

A Harvest of Hope in Douna Ouna

In the heart of Mali, the village of Douna Ouna recently celebrated a bountiful maize harvest. More than just a successful harvest season, this achievement showcases the village’s strength, self-reliance, and progress. Most of the maize is used to feed local families, safeguarding their food security. However, a portion is sold, generating much-needed income to support education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements—further uplifting the entire community.

Smart Farming, Bigger Impact

The women leading these agricultural groups are not just farmers- they’re innovators. By embracing sustainable farming techniques, they’re able to maximize their crops despite tough conditions. Their approach includes:

  • Planting wisely with pocket sowing for better growth.
  • Rotating crops to keep soil healthy and reduce pests.
  • Using natural fertilizers and pest control for eco-friendly farming.
  • Soaking seeds before planting to help them grow faster and stronger.

Empowering Women, Strengthening Communities

By supporting local farming and giving women the tools to succeed, this project is helping families become more independent. These women are not just growing food—they are building a healthier, brighter future for their families and future generations.
