ACT Femmes (Empowering Women and Girls in Tchologo Communities) is a new, five-year project that aims to empower women and girls in the Tchologo region of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). The Action Against Hunger-led project, in partnership with the Government of Canada, will help improve autonomy, inclusion, and access to health services for women and girls, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health as well as maternal and infant health. The project aligns with the objectives of Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, particularly the action point of human dignity, and Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.
Despite notable gains in terms of protection of women in recent years, gender inequality remains a major obstacle in Côte d’Ivoire, particularly in rural regions such as Tchologo, located in the north of the country and bordered by Mali and Burkina Faso. High maternal mortality rates, early marriage and the ongoing practice of female genital mutilation are among the challenges Ivorian women continue to face. Poverty and socio-cultural pressures continue to drive gender inequality and prevent women and girls from fully expressing their rights.
ACT Femmes will increase capacity for civil society and key stakeholders to promote women’s rights and combat gender-based violence while improving access to services for survivors. It will create mechanisms to empower women and girls to improve their sexual and reproductive health, using an inclusive, community-based approach to project planning and implementation. The project will also create infrastructure such as spaces for psychosocial support and baby care, as well as improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.
Action Against Hunger is working with local partners the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Cover of Côte d’Ivoire, the Association des Femmes Juristes de Côte d’Ivoire, and AmaZoON du Web, an association of female bloggers that aims to improve digital literacy among women and girls while advocating for women’s rights and improved access to services.
