The State of Hunger in Nepal

As a result of long-term political instability and conflicts, Nepal faces a range of development and humanitarian challenges – from endemic poverty to widespread undernutrition.

One-third of the Nepalese population lives below the poverty line. To survive, most families depend on farming, a precarious livelihood in Nepal. Surrounded by the Himalayas, the country is vulnerable to natural disasters, including frequent floods, earthquakes, storms, avalanches, and landslides.

How We're Helping in Nepal

Action Against Hunger helps communities and local governments in Nepal to strengthen health systems, improve nutrition treatment services, and build and manage resilient water systems. To help families cope after disasters strike, we distribute hygiene kits, food, and other supplies to people in need.

Community Health Worker Balram measures the mid-upper arm circumference of a three-year-old girl named Bhumika, and finds that she is severely malnourished.
