FAMINE IN SUDAN
Despite its rich natural resources, Mozambique ranks 83rd out of 191 countries on the United Nations Human Development Index. The country is vulnerable to climatic shocks (cyclones, floods, and drought), severely affecting the rural population that depends mainly on agriculture and fishing. Since 2017, the north of the country has faced attacks by insurgent groups, displacing almost 950,000 people at the height of the crisis and damaging villages and public services. Around 850,000 people need emergency food assistance in Cabo Delgado and 53,000 children under the age of five are predicted to suffer from acute malnutrition.
Since the reopening of its office in Mozambique in 2021, Action Against Hunger has intensified its emergency interventions. We developed rapid response mechanisms to raise alerts about mass movements of people and respond to their initial urgent needs, including the distribution of basic necessities and food rations. We also provide food assistance in-kind or as cash transfers revitalizing agriculture and fishing, and diversifying livelihoods.
Our teams rehabilitate destroyed drinking water and sanitation infrastructures following emergencies and provide primary healthcare, including psychosocial support for people with no access to healthcare through mobile health brigades. Since 2023, we have been scaling up access to health and nutrition services by implementing mobile brigades and strengthening health system capacities in the Macomia district.
