Our Life-Saving Work Is at Risk as U.S. Government Freezes International Aid

On January 20th, the new U.S. administration ordered an immediate freeze on U.S. international aid. With up to 30% of Action Against Hunger’s global programs reliant on U.S. Government funding, this sudden halt has forced us to suspend some of our life-saving work.

Uninterrupted funding is essential for us to deliver efficient, well-run programs and provide a continuity of care for malnourished children, pregnant women, and families living in war zones, among others. Without it, the consequences are devastating.

Action Against Hunger Programs at Risk

The funding freeze jeopardizes approximately 50 of our programs in countries like Haiti, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and Afghanistan, who are already grappling with severe crises. Around the world, the devastating impacts of this freeze are already unfolding:

  • In Nigeria, we have suspended treatment for 11,000 children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Without urgent intervention, some may not survive.
  • In Ukraine, we have paused cash assistance for 1,800 displaced families struggling to survive near the front lines.
  • In Colombia, the suspension of humanitarian aid affects 52,000 people, including victims of conflict, food-insecure rural communities, Venezuelan migrants, and others in urgent need.

Despite these challenges, our teams remain committed to reaching those in need. While this funding freeze will undoubtedly affect hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, we are doing everything possible to continue our lifesaving work.

Because a secure, prosperous world is only possible in a world free from hunger- and we will never stop fighting for that vision.
