Myanmar Earthquake Response
A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake devastated Myanmar on the morning of the 28 March, and a 6.4 magnitude aftershock occurred shortly after, deepening the destruction.
At least 1,700 people have lost their lives, with the death toll expected to rise.
Action Against Hunger, which has been working in Myanmar for over 30 years, is deeply concerned about the impact on the most vulnerable communities in the hardest-hit areas.
“We are very concerned about the devastating consequences this earthquake may have on the Burmese population.” shares Ralph Thill, director of Action Against Hunger in Myanmar.
The Burmese authorities have declared a state of emergency in the six worst-affected regions and have launched an appeal for international aid. Even before the earthquake, 17.6 million people in Myanmar were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations.
“Our teams are safe and are ready to intervene with our partners, civil society organizations, UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.” says Thill.
Action Against Hunger (ACF) has been working in Myanmar since 1994, supporting the country’s populations in the areas of nutrition, hygiene, water and sanitation, mental health and disaster response.
