Delivering Lifesaving Nutrition Report: Canada’s Instrumental Role in Addressing the Global Hunger Crisis

After years of hard-won progress, global hunger is rising again. Today, more than 673 million people are living with chronic hunger, while over 40 million face emergency levels of food insecurity across nearly 50 countries. Famine has been declared in two countries for the first time in over a decade, with several more on the brink.

At the same time, global nutrition systems are under extraordinary strain. Conflict, climate shocks, displacement, and economic instability are driving an increase in hunger and malnutrition, while the mechanisms designed to detect, prevent and respond are being stretched beyond their capacity.

Reductions in global resources are forcing governments and partners to make increasingly difficult choices. Lifesaving nutrition services are being scaled back putting millions of lives in jeopardy.

As a global leader in nutrition, we know that addressing this escalating crisis requires a fundamental shift in approach. And Canada, as a trusted global nutrition partner, has a critical role to play.

In October, Action Against Hunger Canada partnered with CanWaCH to convene a multi-stakeholder retreat focused on Canada’s global nutrition investments. Leaders from government, academia, civil society, and philanthropy came together to build a shared understanding of the challenges ahead, identify opportunities for action, and articulate a set of practical recommendations for Canada and its partners.

The insights from this retreat are captured in the Delivering Lifesaving Nutrition report, which lays out clear, actionable steps to help Canada and its partners deliver the highest-impact nutrition solutions that will strengthen systems, save lives, and build a healthier future for all.
