COP30: Advancing a Just Transition for Global Food Systems

As COP30 begins in Belém, the United Nations warns that without urgent and additional measures, the 1.5°c target will not be met. This target, agreed under the Paris Agreement, aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels—a threshold scientists say is critical to avoid the most catastrophic climate impacts. Current projections show temperatures could rise by up to 2.8°C by 2100, a scenario that would devastate crops, displace millions, and deepen global hunger.

This year’s summit, hosted by Brazil from November 10th-21st, brings together delegates from over 190 countries to confront these urgent challenges.

Action Against Hunger will be present at the conference to emphasize a critical message: global food security is at severe risk.

THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND FOOD SECURITY

The climate emergency is already reshaping global food systems. Droughts, floods, and extreme weather events are causing widespread crop failures and hunger crises. At the same time, industrial food production accounts for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, driving environmental degradation and health challenges.

Today, 673 million people suffer from hunger, despite the universal right to adequate nutrition. This crisis demands a bold, equitable transformation of agriculture and food systems, one that puts the right to food and a healthy planet at the center of climate policy. COP30 is a historic opportunity to unite climate action with the fight against hunger and ensure food systems become part of the solution, not the problem.

ACTION AGAINST HUNGER URGES GOVERNMENTS TO:

  • Champion a just transition toward agroecological and climate-resilient food systems.
  • Protect fundamental rights, including the right to food and the right to a healthy environment.
  • Expand access to climate finance, particularly for fragile and conflict-affected regions.
  • Ensure transparency and integrity, by preventing greenwashing and conflicts of interest in private sector engagement.

COP30 is more than a climate summit—it’s a chance to secure a future where no one goes hungry.
