The State of Hunger in Guatemala

Guatemala faces high rates of malnutrition, poverty and maternal and infant mortality, especially in rural and indigenous areas. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate shocks have also increased unemployment and extreme poverty.

Public safety, migration, drug trafficking, education and poor access to clean water and basic sanitation are some of the challenges facing Guatemalans. Many live below the poverty line, making them highly vulnerable to seasonal hunger and food shortages.

How We're Helping in Central America

Action Against Hunger coordinates a dozen international and local NGOs to provide food assistance to thousands of people across Central America in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. In the wake of natural disasters, we improve access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene.
