Over the past few years, there has been an alarming increase in global hunger, largely because of rising conflict, the climate crisis, and chronic inequality.
It’s estimated that between 691 and 783 million people in the world faced hunger in 2022 – about 122 million more people than in 2019. The world is not on track to achieve zero hunger by 2030.
There is a shocking 53% gap in hunger funding for countries facing “crisis” levels of hunger or worse. In the countries experiencing the most severe hunger crises, only 3% of hunger programs are fully funded.
Hunger is a complex issue, and adequately funding response efforts is just part of what it will take to end hunger in our lifetimes.
