One of its charities, Action Against Hunger is responding to meet humanitarian needs in Ukraine and in the neighbouring countries of Poland, Romania, and Moldova. To date, the organisation’s food security, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene projects have helped more than 650,000 people in four countries.
Action Against Hunger recalls that, "in February 2022, cyclones Batsitai and Emnati had caused very heavy damage in the south-east of the island causing floods, population displacements, the destruction of key infrastructures and of dwellings”. The NGO believes that “the large island in the Indian Ocean is bearing the brunt of the consequences of climate change”.
Also known is the direct impact armed conflicts (military crises) have on the increase of the degradation of social conditions. According to the NGO Action Against Hunger, 60 percent of people suffering from this scourge live in countries at war.
The constant challenge presented to the seed sector, though, is how to feed that population. Plant breeders globally are attempting to solve this ever-increasing problem. How do you feed that many people with limited crop land — especially when it’s reported by organizations such as Action Against Hunger that 828 million people are facing hunger today?
Last October, the disease appeared in neighboring Lebanon. “It is not clear how the first cases started, what is certain is that it happened because the water and sanitation conditions are not adequate in Lebanon. Cholera is basically a matter of access to adequate water, hygiene and sanitation conditions. The Lebanese also buy a part of the water they consume, which is not usually chlorinated either and could also be contaminated, so the spread of the disease could come from any of the affected communities,” explains Ibrahim Mustafa Chico, coordinator of Water and Sanitation from Action Against Hunger, an NGO that distributes hygiene and disinfection kits among refugees and applies a chloric solution to kill bacteria in collective wells and latrines.

Only 47 percent of hunger funding needs through the UN humanitarian system are met, leaving a hunger funding gap of 53 per cent, according to the Action Against Hunger 2023 Hunger Funding Gap Report released on Wednesday.
