The UN Reports Staggering Malnutrition Rate In Afghanistan

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021, per AP News, hunger, malnutrition, and the risk of famine have put the nation's needs ahead of some traditionally associated with such issues (i.e., Ethiopia, South Sudan, Yemen, Syria), the UN WFP USA states. Afghanistan's population stands currently at roughly 41.7 million, of whom 24 million don't have enough food to eat, Action Against Hunger points out. And a full six million people in Afghanistan are so malnourished as to be considered on the brink of starvation, as the UN WFP USA notes on its web page devoted to its work in Afghanistan.

Case Study: Training up local health workers in Uganda

In January 2022, Action Against Hunger in Uganda carried out a contextual analysis for MAMI (the Management of small & nutritionally At-risk Infants under six months & their Mothers) in Kiryandongo and Adjumani Districts. They found that a large proportion of the small and nutritionally at-risk infants under six months and their mothers were not being identified nor was there an existing continuum of care from birth up to 6-months of age to support mothers and their young infants to survive and thrive.

Devex Dish: WFP chief David Beasley sits down with Devex Dish

I asked you all last week to share your thoughts with me about how much influence the U.S. Agency for International Development may have in making wasting treatment delivery more effective, and what role simplified approaches could play in stretching resources to reach more children. I received this from Heather Stobaugh, senior learning and research specialist at Action Against Hunger, who helped draft the NGO letter to USAID Administrator Samantha Power: “It’s important to note that simplified approaches are not a single ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. Rather, simplified approaches are a range of innovations that show promise to help close the treatment gap for child wasting. This menu of options enables national governments and implementing actors to select and roll out innovations that are appropriate and acceptable within their unique contexts.”
