Race Against Hunger
Welcome to the Race Against Hunger! Here you’ll find all the information you need about our Race Against Hunger initiative—what it is, how it works, and how you can get involved. Empowering people like you to take a stand against hunger is a vital part of our fight against global malnutrition. Whether you’re a student, a teacher, a corporate representative, or a concerned citizen, there’s plenty you can do to help put an end to global malnutrition.
What is the Race Against Hunger?
The Race Against Hunger is a service learning campaign that unites students from all over the world in the fight against global hunger and malnutrition. Tapping into the great potential of youth to become powerful agents of change, the Race aims to educate Canadian students about the causes of global and domestic hunger , gain a more meaningful perspective on a critical problem, understand their interconnectedness in the world, and ultimately act on their newfound knowledge.
The Race can take place in a gym, on a track or sports field, around city blocks, in a local park or even on school grounds, depending on what works best for your school. The program is designed to be tailored to fit the needs of each school, so be creative!
The Race Against Hunger: two steps
First students take part in an Awareness Session at their school. During this session students learn about malnutrition, and have the opportunity to ask questions about ACF and malnutrition. The second part of the Race Against Hunger is the Race Day which is held at schools across Canada and gives students the opportunity to earn donations by running as many laps as they can. It’s a fun event that fosters good natured competition amongst students and celebrates the solidarity of the global Race Against Hunger movement.
Every year, more than 265 000 students around the world run together to raise funds for the fight against world hunger.
Featured School – College International Marie de France:
In June 2014, for the 3rd consecutive year, the students of the College International Marie de France rallied to the fight against hunger. More than 370 students ran to raise funds for the Action against Hunger programs in Madagascar (country honoured in 2014). By participating in this event, students were able to raise $ 5,352.
In June 2015, the College International Marie de France will renew its commitment and raise funds for Action Against Hunger programs in Burkina Faso.
“It is with great enthusiasm that more than 350 students of the College International Marie de France, in Montreal participated for the third consecutive year to the 2014 Race Against Hunger. This race educates youth in hunger-related issues happening around the world. Throughout the year, students are introduced, through their program, to the issues of sustainable development, which include the themes of poverty and malnutrition in the world. Several awareness sessions have been conducted jointly with members of the ACF team in several classrooms and the race has become a highly anticipated event and greatly appreciated by our students.” Bruno Leroux, History teacher at College International Marie de France, Montréal (QC)
