The COVID-19 crisis threatens the most vulnerable
As the coronavirus spreads around the world, wars and armed conflicts continue to rage. The negative effects of armed conflict on populations will only be exacerbated by COVID-19 – it is already driving vulnerable communities deeper into hunger and poverty. “I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown,” demanded UN Secretary-General António Guterres in an urgent appeal. We join the appeal and expect the Canadian Government to do its utmost to bring about a global ceasefire.
A humanitarian disaster threatens
In conflict areas, the situation was already disastrous before the coronavirus. People are dying every day from conflict and hunger. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, while at the same time there is no adequate health care. The hygienic conditions are poor, diseases are spreading rapidly. A large-scale corona outbreak in war zones such as Syria, Yemen or South Sudan will have catastrophic consequences.
We need worldwide solidarity!
