
When an emergency like Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines occurs, we all know that people need help. Many of us respond by giving donations to the NGOs or other organizations we trust to make a positive impact. But what actually happens on the ground? And how does an NGO such as ACF plan for for longer-term improvement of an affected community?
While every scenario is different, in general we can characterize emergency response in three main phases. The image below provides a snapshot of these three important phases. This example is based on ACF plans in response to Typhoon Haiyan.
