Crisis in Yemen

ACF IN YEMEN

Action Against Hunger began working in Yemen in 2012 to address hunger in the country where approximately 850,000 children are acutely malnourished.

In Yemen, more than half of the population is in dire need of humanitarian aid and the situation is worsening.  13.4 million people lack access to safe drinking water and it is estimated 1.6 million people suffer from malnutrition.

Action Against Hunger runs 40 nutritional centres in the region of Hodeidah, Hajjah, and Aden-Lahj.

CURRENT SITUATION

In recent months, the country’s near civil war state has created insecurity and instability. The international intervention this week and recent internal conflict has compounded an already tense situation for so many impoverished and vulnerable Yemenis.” said Vincent Taillandier, Director of Operations of Action Against Hunger.

This week’s military actions affect our programs.  Until now Action Against Hunger teams have managed to maintain essential activities including the treatment of malnourished children.

People must have access to humanitarian assistance.  Access to assistance is critical to survival and Action Against Hunger calls on the warring parties to respect the neutrality and impartiality of humanitarian groups and allow our teams protected access to continue our work. The parties to the conflict must allow free and direct access to the Yemini people in need.

The ongoing crisis in the country has destroyed access to basic needs including health care, clean water, and food.

We need to take action as quickly as possible.  Our operations can adapt to maintain essential programs such as the treatment of malnourished children, but we must now be prepared to respond to the thousands of people who will be forced to flee the combat zones. Safety and respect for civilians and humanitarian personnel are of paramount importance.  Funding must increase in proportion to the catastrophic circumstances of the Yemeni people today.” says Taillandier.
